The £690m Government Key Worker Living programme gives public sector workers, such as nurses and teachers a helping hand to buy homes and the objective is to help people working in front line roles for key public services that may have difficulty in buying.
Are you a Key Worker?
According to Directgov you can get help if you are one of the following:
- nurses and other NHS clinical staff
- teachers in schools and in further education and sixth form colleges
- police officers and some civilian staff in some police forces
- prison and probation service staff
- social workers, educational psychologists, planners (in London) and occupational therapists employed by local councils
- whole-time junior fire officers and retained fire fighters (all grades) in some fire and rescue services (currently only in Hertfordshire)
How does it work?
As a key worker, you may get help in several ways:
- Equity loans of up to 50% of the property's value to buy a home on the open market within the Open Market HomeBuy scheme for key workers and selected first time buyers (shared equity).
- Shared ownership of new-build properties. You buy at least 25 per cent of the home and pay a reduced rent on the remaining share.
