Work starts on affordable Openshaw homes

Affordable housebuilder Lovell has started construction work on a new 432-home development in Openshaw, east Manchester.

The £65 million housing project in the Toxteth Street area will ultimately consist of 36 two-bedroom apartments, 390 two and three-storey townhouses and six bungalows.

According to the council, the first phase of the plan, which also include secure parking and local amenities, will be completed by next autumn.

"This community-orientated new housing scheme has been a long time in the planning," said Lovell regional director Nigel Yates.

"It will make an important contribution to the wider regeneration of the area by answering the demand for high-quality new homes for sale and affordable rent locally."

While many of the houses will be available to buy, some will be placed under the control of a local housing association.

This is not the first Manchester venture for Lovell, which specialises in affordable mixed-tenure housing.

There are already two Lovell developments in Middleton, known as Brooklands and Rydal Walk, as well as The Way in Beswick.
